Radio Playouts

OmniPlayer visual radio integration

Add visual radio to your OmniPlayer studio. VRA uses the now-playing feed to update song titles and trigger graphics. Add Audio Triggers and Camera Assist for microphone-driven switching and PTZ framing.

How OmniPlayer and VRA work together.

Now playing on screen

Link graphic fields to the title and artist supplied by OmniPlayer. They update when VRA receives the next item.

Graphics follow the rundown

Item types and item groups act as triggers, so a jingle, a song or a commercial each bring up their own graphic.

More than one OmniPlayer

Connect several OmniPlayer instances to one VRA Core. Each connection has its own address, so their updates stay separate.

Cameras cut on the mics

OmniPlayer says what is playing. The studio microphones say who is talking. Add Audio Triggers to select shots from microphone activity and Camera Assist to prepare supported PTZ cameras off air.

The feed connects in the studio

OmniPlayer posts to the VRA Core app on the studio network. Only the resulting state syncs to VRA Cloud.

How to set it up.

Requirements

  • OmniPlayer MultiPlayer with the JSON HTTP export.
  • The VRA Core app reachable from the OmniPlayer machine on port 3002.
  1. In VRA Cloud, open Settings, Advanced, Automations, add OmniPlayer, enable it and copy the API endpoint.

  2. In OmniPlayer MultiPlayer, open Settings, Exports, add an OmniPlayer JSON http post, paste the endpoint with the host of the Core machine and select the OmniPlayerBroadcastJSONRPC format.

  3. Start an item in MultiPlayer and check that VRA shows it as now playing.

OmniPlayer questions

Can I use OmniPlayer for visual radio? +

Yes. VRA reads the JSON HTTP export built into OmniPlayer MultiPlayer. Link its title and artist values to graphics, and use item types or groups to trigger visuals. For automatic camera switching, also connect your microphone channels to Audio Triggers and configure your cameras and switcher.

Does the OmniPlayer feed trigger camera cuts? +

No. OmniPlayer tells VRA what is playing. VRA does the picture: Audio Triggers decides which camera goes on air from the studio microphones, Camera Assist frames it, and your video switcher makes the cut.

Does OmniPlayer need a plugin for VRA? +

No. The link uses the JSON HTTP export that is built into OmniPlayer MultiPlayer. It posts to the VRA Core app, which listens for it.

Where does OmniPlayer send now-playing data? +

OmniPlayer posts to VRA Core on your studio network. Core then shares the resulting now-playing state with VRA Cloud for browser control and monitoring.

Can I connect more than one OmniPlayer instance? +

Yes. Every automation connection in VRA has its own route key and endpoint, so each instance posts to its own URL.

What does VRA do with the OmniPlayer data? +

It puts the title and artist on screen through the graphics variables, and it uses the item type and item groups as triggers in the rundown, so the right graphic appears with the right kind of item.

M&I Broadcast Services

About OmniPlayer.

OmniPlayer is the radio production and playout system from M&I Broadcast Services in the Netherlands. It covers scheduling, production and on-air playout, and runs at national and regional broadcasters in the Netherlands and Belgium.

OmniPlayer keeps playing the radio programme. Its built-in export sends now-playing information to VRA, where you link title and artist fields to graphics and use item types or groups to trigger visuals. Camera automation is a separate part of the setup: Audio Triggers reads microphone activity, Camera Assist prepares supported camera shots, and your switcher selects the picture.
